Day Friend (Byrne, Hampshire, Kent)
Remember when you were young and you used to have summer holidays in the sun? Well this is a song to try and recapture those times.
Drive down for the weekend We'd all make a day friend Press your face against the window waiting Its a race to see the sea Play out in any weather As long as were together And stay up to love those sunny evenings Day skies redden overhead No dont ever change your mind No dont ever change your mind Im trying to reach you Im trying not to leave you Now we see the world in a different way I still feel the same for you today Footsteps in the sand get washed away
Originally Rich had the idea to write about the friend you always made when you were younger and who you played with on beach holidays in the sun. The friend for a day, because invariably you never saw them again, and they now only exist in old holiday photos. With that idea in mind, Rich and Sarah came up with a long list of holiday words and themes, some are listed below. Quite a few lyric sessions were had for this song as some of the lyrics were a bit gay! Ben and Rich worked on the lyrics for the second verse and added a subtle melody variation half an hour before debuting the song at The Garage on 21.11.03. They also added the trademark harmonies in the bridges and chrorus. Ben is justly proud the unusual chord choice (a C major in the key of A) that rounds off the intro to this song. This bluesy chord change was later used just before the middle 8 and as the final chord to the song. It was one of these songs a bit like BLU where the original versions were longer and after a bit of culling and tightening the song ended up with the 2 verse format. Marco's keys are great in this song just what it needs. Although a bit gay this is one of Rich's favourites OLD WORDS Skim stones over the waves Hide out in penny arcades We can stay like its summer everyday wheel down the rollercoaster escape the morning parades making daisy chains on the lawn Piers rotting wood looking down through the gaps at the sea Trampolines and kiddy rollercoaster trains Boy's trunks and girls swimming costumes with frilly skirt bitts frisbee coves stripy windbreakers orange and brown 79s curtains/carpets/sofas/caravans/chalets coconut fragrant suncream! pink blotchy sunburn tingling in bed and making you shiver in the evenings country lanes that won't end peddlbeoats making scrapbooks seaweed around rockpools sandy feet dancing floating dust coloured faces fish and chips etc etc etc (there's more than enough for another song here!) OLD MELODY A Amaj7 A7 And when there's nothing else to say F# Then you should go for the weekend
