Freefalling (Bensi, Byrne, Hampshire, Kent)
When everybody says you need someone you put up your wall but everyone's anyone and not The One and you've been through them all. Standing on the edge, I'm going blind staring at the view. I'm freefalling with you in mind, hoping that you knew. Yeah maybe I should breakaway, and start over. I can't wait, wait until the time that you see, it doesn't matter. but 'til then you can keep on running to me. It doesn't matter... to me When it's another date repeated twice. Made your compromise. This is the last time you've paid the price. Say no more goodbyes.
When you finally meet 'The One' sometimes you can forget they've been through heartache to get there.
Rich originally had the melody for the verses and lyrics which went "When everybody says your beautiful" and it was going to be a love song, but these got thrown away in favour of angst! Rich and Sarah spent an evening writing the verses around this melody and the chorus. It's a song that unusually means different things to the writers but that's the magic of songwriting! Really its for you to decide which one is for you. Rich uploaded a demo for the boys to listen to. Ben was impressed with the song but was worried that the bridge sounded like the middle- 8 to Reality's Talking and was letting the rest of the song down. With this in mind the Boys went round to Marcos to work on a new bridge. Ben picked up a guitar and played a Gm7 (Richs original bridge chord) and went for a Dm but misfretted it as a Dmadd9. Fortunately the mistake sounded good and the unusual 9th note inspired a new melody and some throwaway words that originally went "Yeah, and for the 1st time in my life, I've seen Marcos light!" This same session saw Marco come up with the amazing new chord that rounds off the chorus. The Boys reconvened at Marcos the following week and spent several hours working on a new chorus with a rising augmented chord section from Marco that sounds a little like a McCartney song. Three days later Rich came round to Bens place and after careful consideration they decide to reinstate the original chorus and consign the other section to a middle 8 and extended outro. The day was rounded off with a beer at the 3 Daws in Gravesend where they came up with final bridge lyrics. Rich and Sarah again met in Studio 3, to tidy up the last verse, though the "compromise" line was added a few weeks later by Ben & Rich.
