Goodnight Elizabeth
(Bensi, Hampshire, Kent, Lord)
A lovely ballad that rocks up in the middle. mortimer's most beautifully crafted creation
Goodnight Elizabeth it's time for you to close your eyes
Breathe easy there's no hurry you can take your time tonight
Sleep tight Elizabeth you'll see things in a different light
Take comfort don't you worry I'll be there to say goodnight
It's unusual to have things easy, disappointment comes free.
There's complications enough around me but it's going to be...
alright, alright, it's alright
Don't you feel you can talk to me?
Alright, alright, it's alright
There is much you haven't seen
Would you agree things haven't quite turned out the way we planned
These one way conversations aren't helping you to understand.
I don't expect I'm changing anybody's point of view
These little misunderstandings feel so overdue.
We met a lovely girl called Elizabeth in a New York City bar in July 2000, she loved the English accents and kept making us say 'Extraordinary'.
The next day Ben wrote a couple of lines 'Goodnight Elizabeth' then the verse structure was quickly finished. The Cm chord took a while though.
The bridge was started in Daytona Beach, Florida and finished later in London, while the chorus was written in Miami. We are proud of this song, there are so many good bits! Listen to the 4th verse and see for yourselves.
Is it about death or is it a lullaby? You decide.
