In My Way
(Byrne, Hampshire, Kent)
Ben first heard this song when Rich demoed the verse chords and melody whilst the Boys visited Jon up North in February 2006. Rich grabbed Jon's acoustic guitar and Ben sat down at Marco's keyboard. They jammed the verse for a while and then tried coming up with some new bits: Ben plays a B B7 E followed by a crazy chord (a Cm/F) and tries to use this to start a new bridge. This doesn't quite work and a few minutes later he follows the B B7 with a more simple E to B which becomes the bridge chords. Rich plucks a melody from the ether, accompanied by some throwaway soppy love lyrics (which we eventually decide to keep)! They then try ending this new bridge with Ben's crazy chords (extending the earlier pattern further to E Cm/F Eb7/G G#m) followed by a repeat of Rich's end of verse chords which, now repeated, become even more of a hook.
Rich and Sarah got together to think about what the song could be about. Well its about meeting someone you really like and you can't believe you are talking to them, its a little love song that's what it is!
Ben and Rich later finalise the lyrics by tweaking the "favorite scenes" line and adding the extra "who" to the first line of the song. They later make the bridge shorter, reusing Ben's ascending chords at the end a new middle 8 section from Rich (though they spend several hours working on some weird timing variations). Ben also works on adding the Eb7/G chord to the bridge and comes up with two possible variations. Rich likes both so they use one in the 2nd bridge and one in the 3rd. Rich also comes up with a new chord (a G instead of an E) and they use that in the 2nd bridge.
On the 28th May 2006 Rich and Ben go to the pub and come up with lyrics for the last verse (some are recycled from Ben's lyric book) and Rich also comes up with a melody variation. The following weekend they scrap the first half of the previous week's words and finish the lyrics by returning to a phone theme. They also finalise the bridge lyrics by adding the "I want you to be..." line which will hopefully make women (and gay men) go weak at the knees!
Marco came up with his distinctive riff and also suggested Matt's 16 beat drum pattern in the verses (in fact he wanted the whole song to have 16 beat drums). Recording started on 21st August 2006.
Who, who would have thought
we'd end up talking.
I didn't get to bed 'til four
'cause you were in my way.
You, are all I can see
staring through the ceiling
watching back my favourite scenes
on permanent replay
Don't take your love from me
It could still happen to you
Don't take you love from me
'cause I want you to be... In my way
I said call, she said
"try to keep the line free".
And I was in a hurry to wait
while you were in my way.
