Missiles and Flowers
(Byrne, Hampshire, Kent)
Sometimes you can't let go when you know you should. There is such a fine line between friends and enemies.
I must say I have enjoyed this week of honesty
Like a new act is starting, starting to begin
Although I've always known you, I find I can't let you be
It took so long to face up to your insecurities
I had wait for you, to bring the truth to me
Although I've always known you, I find I can't let you be
Your fronts blow hot and cold, our words fly to and fro
Sunshine and Showers
Missiles and Flowers
We are Sunshine and Showers
So let's not pretend we've come to the end of the line
Dont turn away when you're given opportunities
Open your eyes and you'll see the possibilities
The idea for this song came when Sarah was lying in bed listening to the XFM breakfast show. She noticed that newsreader, Chris Smith, seemed to say that the weather would be "Sunshine and Showers" every day and thought that this was a really good metaphor for the ups and downs of life and relationships.
So the first lines were:
We are Sunshine and Showers
Missiles and Flowers
Whilst Rich was standing outside Watford police station (that's another story!) he came up with a melody for it but had to wait till he had the guitar to flesh out the chords. Rich and Sarah got together to make the words fit and came up with three verses quite quickly in a couple of sessions in studio 3.
Rich showed it to Ben and he liked the song but thought the bridges were too repetitive and needed some work. He picked up a guitar and worked with Rich to flesh out a chord variation to spice things up. Later they worked on a middle bit together and also came up with the arrangement.
All in all it's a simple acoustic tune but is beautiful in its simplicity. G Bm C D+ with the augmented D providing the hook.
