Secret Place
(Hampshire, Kent)
An old flame pays mortimer a visit. There may be trouble ahead. A cheeky rocker with
a marshmellow middle! It rocks at the start and doesn't let up once.
When we were younger we said that one day
We'd meet up when we were older.
Compare the greys and talk about those happy days,
It would be lovely to see each other.
But we'd have to want to make it happen, you could come round here
Put your feet up on my worn out settee and lend a helping ear
I am treading on uncertain ground
And it might help if you come and see me.
But I'm used to late cancellations with no explanations
If that makes it easy
You see we'd have to want to make it happen, if you came round here
Get it together, watch some TV and take me through the years
Secret place where we can go
We could take it slowly if it makes you happy
In the place where we can go
Will we feel the same this time around in the places we can go..
It isn't always the same for you and me
Can I bring round something for you to see
Situations running through my head
We'll have it worked out anytime that you see me
But I'm used to late cancellations with no explanations
If that makes it easy
You see we'd have to want to make it happen, if you came round here
Get it together, watch some TV, and take me through the years
Secret place where we can go,
We could take it slowly if it makes you happy
In the place where we can go,
Will we feel the same this time around in the places we can go
In the places we can go.
This song had been around for ages and ages and was written by Rich on acoustic guitar. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see an old flame you haven't seen for a while? Will we feel the same?
Most lyrics had already been written but the 'lend a helping ear' line and a few others came later in a songwriting session on a minibus taking Ben, Rich & Jon white-water rafting in Aspen in 2001. Another brief session in a London pub gave birth to the 'watch some TV' lyric whilst Ben & Rich checked out photos from the first ever Mortimer photo session. The middle part G# and C#m was written most recently.
There are many demos showing this song's transformation from acoustic pop to balls-out rocker. Once we got the feel of the rhythm guitar and the bass, we worked on it with
Matt to get some good drums. Marco came up with some crazy Batmanesque keyboard bits (listen to the intro!) and Jon rocks it up as usual.
