Story (Hampshire, Kent, Lord)
Story is a mellow track about putting your life into words, except you can't because it isn't written yet! Just go with the flow and make your own decisions. Too many people dwell on missed opportunity and bad decisions, they'd benefit greatly from looking forwards rather than backwards, (sage words indeed). Jon came up with a flowing chord sequence from Cadd9 to G to Am7 then Cm7 and G again from which the melody fell naturally. Jon's original lyrics for the 1st verse were about Space and these were later rewritten by Ben & Rich on a plane trip to Ireland (though his 2nd verse was retained but with 2/4 bar). Jon also had an idea hanging around of using a simple melody sung over one chord for the chorus. The chorus was further worked on by Rich & Ben when Jon first demoed the song at Ben's place on 13th September 2003. The mindisc reveals that for the end of the chorus Ben came up with an A7 followed by a Am7 and Rich then suggests changing the Am7 to the Cm7 also used in the verse. The Chorus structure was now complete! The three Boys played around with the song again whilst on holiday in Ireland, and Rich came up with a delicate bridge easing from verse into the chorus that completed the picture (I mean story). In November 2003 Jon and Ben worked out the words and final melody for the chorus and also wrote the lyrics for the first line of the bridge. In October 2005 (just prior to recording the song, and 2 years after first hearing it) Ben and Rich rewrite the rest of the bridge lyrics and the last verse .
Can you see yourself in a story written for someone else but scared to turn a page and find out how the story ends? There's a hero in every story taking on the world carrys hope inspired by the thought of you Don't be afraid but your story's not the only one unsung Seen so many people missing out Just watching somethings pass them by Make decisions based on circumstance that never see the light of day If you played a part in my story could it have a happy end? A chapter torn away rewritten in a better way
